About Us

Dr. Mayra Lizeth Sanjuan, the owner and founder of Florecer Wellness and Acupuncture, is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (DTCM), licensed acupuncturist, and herbalist. She immigrated from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, at the age of 7 and faced numerous challenges as an undocumented child. These included learning a new language, navigating a new culture, and dealing with limited access to healthcare, educational resources, and social support, all of which created significant barriers to her well-being. These experiences shaped her resilience and profoundly influenced her understanding of health and wellness, highlighting the importance of accessible care.

Dr. Sanjuan’s personal journey with health issues, particularly her experience with endometriosis, has fueled her passion for holistic healing. By the age of 18, she had already navigated the complexities of the Western healthcare system while managing a lifelong health challenge. This journey ignited her dedication to patient education and advocacy, reinforcing her belief in the necessity of open access to health resources. She is committed to providing compassionate, individualized care that empowers patients to improve their quality of life.

At Florecer Wellness, our mission is to plant seeds for flourishing health. We meet you where you are on your journey and respect all bodies equally. We believe that empowerment and education are vital for reconnecting individuals to themselves and the world around them. Our collaborative approach celebrates the unique stories that each person brings, recognizing that we are all beautiful and vibrant individuals deserving of individualized care and support.

Dr. Sanjuan focuses on treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. Her personal experiences have taught her the importance of addressing the emotional, physical, and cultural aspects of health. By integrating traditional acupuncture techniques with insights from modern medicine, she provides comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Dr. Sanjuan has gained valuable experience interning at the Santa Cruz Women’s Health Center, where she collaborated with Christina Hanley, L.Ac. working with the community to provide accessible acupuncture. She also interned with Holly Guzman, an expert in Japanese-style acupuncture as well as Jennifer Root, an expert in orthopedic and dermatology. These opportunities enriched her approach to treatment and solidified her commitment to holistic health.

Dr. Sanjuan holds a dual Master’s and Doctorate degree in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine from Five Branches University, along with a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Currently, she sees patients at Florecer Wellness and Acupuncture as well as the Five Branches University Clinic, where she strives to empower individuals on their healing journeys.

When you visit us, you’ll find a warm, welcoming environment where you can feel safe and understood. During your first appointment, we’ll discuss your health history and any concerns you may have. This allows me to create a personalized treatment plan that empowers you on your healing journey.

As a bilingual and bicultural practitioner, Dr. Sanjuan draws inspiration from her rich heritage in her work. From a young age, she embraced herbs and various healing traditions, which laid a strong foundation for her current practice as an herbalist. She believes that Eastern medicine and Mexican folk medicine share many beautiful similarities, and she lovingly integrates these traditions into her treatments. This cultural competency allows her to connect with patients on a personal level, honoring their unique backgrounds and stories while providing comprehensive, compassionate care.

When Dr. Sanjuan steps away from the clinic, she cherishes the moments spent with her loved ones and her senior dog, Dulce. Her passion for foraging herbs and crafting herbal medicine reflects her commitment to holistic well-being. Outside of her professional pursuits, she finds joy in watching sports, diving into a good book, and nurturing both her indoor and outdoor plants. Hiking is another favorite pastime, especially when she can catch the breathtaking sunsets of fall in Santa Cruz. These enriching experiences not only enhance her life but also allow her to bring a well-rounded perspective to her practice and her patients.
